Before You Make the Decision, Ask God for Wisdom

Business leadership requires decisions.

Some are ordinary. Others can change the direction of an entire business.

Do we accept the contract?
Do we enter the partnership?
Do we hire this person?
Do we borrow the money?
Do we expand now or wait?
Do we pursue this opportunity?
Do we walk away from something that looks profitable?

A spreadsheet can tell us whether something is financially possible. Research can tell us what the market is doing. Advisors can help us understand risk.

But none of these can replace the wisdom of God.

For the Christian entrepreneur, the question is not simply:

“Is this a good business decision?”

We must also ask:

“Is this the right decision for the assignment God has entrusted to me?”

Not Every Good Opportunity Is a God Opportunity

One of the disciplines of Kingdom business is learning that opportunity and instruction are not the same thing.

An opportunity may be profitable and still be wrong for your assignment.

A partnership may look strategic and still connect you to people, values or obligations that eventually pull the business away from its consecration.

Expansion may be possible but premature.

A closed door may not be rejection. It may be protection.

And sometimes the wisdom of God will tell you to proceed when the numbers make you nervous because He knows what you cannot yet see.

This is why discernment matters.

Scripture says:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5

God does not merely care about what happens on Sunday.

He is interested in the decisions made on Monday morning too.

The boardroom belongs under His authority.

The budget belongs under His authority.

The contract belongs under His authority.

The hiring decision belongs under His authority.

The expansion plan belongs under His authority.

If God Is Boss, then seeking His wisdom cannot be the final step after we have already made the decision.

It must become part of how we lead.

Wisdom Is More Than Knowing What to Do

Biblical wisdom is not merely intelligence.

It is the ability to perceive and respond rightly under the government of God.

Sometimes wisdom says yes.

Sometimes wisdom says no.

Sometimes wisdom says not yet.

Sometimes wisdom tells us to investigate further.

Sometimes wisdom exposes what excitement has prevented us from seeing.

Sometimes wisdom requires us to walk away from money because accepting it would cost something more valuable than money.

And sometimes wisdom requires courage because God's direction does not always resemble the safest human option.

The entrepreneur who has consecrated the business must therefore remain teachable enough to say:

“Lord, I have an opinion about this decision, but I want Your wisdom more than I want my preferred outcome.”

Before You Decide

Before making a significant business decision, bring the matter before God deliberately.

Ask:

Does this align with Scripture?

God's direction will never require us to violate His character or His Word.

What is driving me?

Is this decision coming from wisdom—or fear, desperation, pride, competition, greed or the need to prove something?

What will this decision require me to compromise?

Some opportunities become expensive only after we calculate what they demand from our integrity.

Do I have peace to proceed, or am I forcing something?

Not every difficulty means stop, but neither should every warning be ignored.

Have I sought wise counsel?

God can use mature, trustworthy people to expose blind spots we cannot see ourselves.

Am I willing to hear “no”?

This may be the hardest question.

Prayer for direction is not surrender if we have already decided that God is only allowed to say yes.

A Prayer for Wisdom in Business Decisions

Heavenly Father,

I come before You acknowledging that You see what I cannot see.

You know the beginning and the end.

You know the motives of people, the consequences of decisions, the opportunities ahead and the dangers hidden from my sight.

You know what belongs to my assignment and what does not.

Therefore, I bring my business decisions before You.

Give me wisdom.

Where I am confused, bring clarity.

Where I am emotionally attached to an outcome, give me objectivity.

Where fear is influencing me, give me faith.

Where ambition is driving me, correct my motives.

Where impatience is pushing me ahead of Your timing, give me restraint.

Where hesitation is keeping me from something You have commanded, give me courage.

Father, give me discernment concerning contracts and agreements.

Give me discernment concerning partnerships.

Give me discernment concerning employees and leadership appointments.

Give me discernment concerning customers and suppliers.

Give me discernment concerning borrowing, investment and financial commitments.

Give me discernment concerning expansion and new markets.

Give me discernment concerning opportunities that appear attractive but do not belong to my assignment.

Help me recognise doors You have opened and doors You have closed.

Do not allow desperation to make decisions for me.

Do not allow money to silence discernment.

Do not allow urgency to replace wisdom.

Do not allow the fear of missing an opportunity to move me outside Your timing.

Protect this business from agreements that would compromise its consecration.

Protect us from partnerships that look beneficial but carry consequences we cannot presently see.

Expose hidden information that needs to be known before commitments are made.

Bring the right counsel around me.

Give me humility to listen.

And when You warn me, give me the discipline to stop.

When You tell me to wait, give me patience.

When You tell me to proceed, give me courage.

When You tell me to walk away, give me the strength to release what I thought I needed.

Holy Spirit, govern my thinking.

Govern my conversations.

Govern my negotiations.

Govern my planning.

Govern my responses.

Govern every decision that carries the future of this business.

I refuse to make major decisions and then ask You to bless them afterwards.

I invite You into the decision before it is made.

May wisdom preserve what You have entrusted to me.

May discernment protect the assignment.

May obedience determine our direction.

I declare that God is the source of wisdom for this business.

I declare that I will seek God's direction before making decisions that affect the assignment He has entrusted to me.

I declare that fear, desperation, pride and greed will not govern my decisions.

I declare that financial gain will never become more important than obedience.

I declare that I will have discernment to distinguish a good opportunity from a God-directed opportunity.

I declare that hidden motives, wrong partnerships and dangerous agreements will be exposed before they take root in this business.

I declare that God will surround me with wise counsel and give me humility to receive correction.

I declare that I will not move ahead of God's timing because of pressure or comparison.

I declare that I will not remain behind when God has commanded me to move.

I declare that I have courage to say yes when God says yes.

I have discipline to say no when God says no.

I have patience to wait when God says not yet.

I declare that every contract, partnership, investment, appointment and major decision will be brought under the authority of God.

I declare that confusion will not govern this business.

I declare that wisdom, discernment, integrity and obedience will shape our direction.

I declare that what God closes, we will not force open.

What God exposes, we will not ignore.

What God forbids, we will not pursue.

What God instructs, we will obey.

What God entrusts to us, we will faithfully steward.

And I declare:

God owns.
We steward.
God directs.
We obey.

Wisdom Before Strategy

There is nothing wrong with strategy.

Christian businesses should research, plan, analyse, measure and prepare carefully.

But strategy must never become a substitute for surrender.

The mature Kingdom entrepreneur learns to bring both the Bible and the business plan to the table.

We analyse the numbers.

We investigate the facts.

We seek competent advice.

We perform due diligence.

And then we remain humble enough to ask:

“Lord, what are You saying?”

Because sometimes the most important business decision will not be the opportunity you accepted.

It will be the one God gave you the wisdom to refuse.

Before you sign it, pray.

Before you fund it, pray.

Before you appoint them, pray.

Before you expand, pray.

Before you walk away, pray.

Before you make the decision:

Ask God for wisdom.
